CAPACITY BUILDING SEMINARS, WORKSHOPS & WEBINARS

BVF conducts workshops and seminars to help build the capacity for nonprofits as well as other program and organizational enhancement activities such as “Starting a Nonprofit Organization”,  “Preliminary Grant Proposal Development”,  “Enhancing Program with Photography”, “Introduction to Fund Accounting”, “Budget Development for Federal Guidelines”, and “An Overview of  IRS 1023 Tax Exempt Application”.

 

BVF's staff is well-trained and is certified in providing specific capacity building training and technical assistance advice and consultation in many areas of nonprofit management governance and infrastructure. BVF provides capacity training for both board, staff and emerging nonprofit organizations. BVF also works and collaborates with other service providers who come with a vast level of expertise. BOARD DEVELOPMENT                      
BVF has provided training in board development areas such as “Governance versus Support”, “Developing A Vision & Mission Statement “,  “Developing and/or Revising Bylaws”,  “Conducting A Board Meeting”, and  “Board Recruitment Process and Policies”.

 

STANDARDS FOR EXCELLENCE ®TRAINING
Standards for Excellence ® (SFX) training provides nonprofits with the organizational and board policies necessary to meet IRS compliance and other required accountability standards, such as Conflict of Interest and Disclosure Statements, Acceptance of Gifts Policy, Employee Performance Evaluation Policy, and Fundraising Activities Policy Statement. This training is only conducted through Yvonne Petersen, a SFX certified training.

BVF has a licensed consultant on staff that specializes in ethics and accountability training for nonprofit organizations through training provided , particularly in board development, board governance, organizational infrastructure, and other policies. The Standards for Excellence® Code covers eight principle areas that incorporate 55 performance standards.  Areas covered include:

 

  • Mission and Program

  • Governing Body

  • Conflict of Interest

  • Human Resources

  • Financial and Legal

  • Openness

  • Fundraising            

  • Public Affairs and Public Policy
    

STRATEGIC PLANNING
This process includes a SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weakness, Opportunity, Threats) that results in the organization’s draft vision statement, mission statement, goals and objectives and strategies. It also includes costs, timeline, and line of responsibility in organizational planning.

 

NONPROFIT STATUS AND TAX FILING OVERVIEW

This 6-hour workshop for nonprofit that includes two sessions. The first session will provide an Overview of the IRS 501c3 tax exemption for nonprofits and the second session will provide an Overview of the Modified and Simplified 990EZ for Most 501c3’s & Nonprofits. BVF anticipates offering this workshop on a semi-annual basis. At the end of the workshop, the participants will:

  • Under the basic differences between a nonprofit and a 501c3 tax-exempt nonproft
  • Understand the required "test" for 501c3 exempt status
  • Learn what determines a private foundation or public charity status
  • Know what activities to avoid that may jeopardize your 501c3 status
  • Understand the changes to the 990EZ care form
  • Know the new schedules added to the 990EZ
  • Know what schedules apply to their organization
  • Get basic tips on e-filing
